Remodeling the body after weight loss

Obesity is considered the disease of the 21st century. It represents one of the most frequent nutrition afflictions in the world, and it is actually being considered as a pandemic. When we talk about obesity, we don’t necessarily refer to aesthetic issues, but a complex metabolic one with numerous notable complications. In extreme cases, obesity can even lead to the death of the patient.

Obesity is characterized by the abnormal increase in body weight that is triggered by an imbalance between the calories we eat and the calories we use. We can fight obesity by changing one’s lifestyle and starting with a correct way of eating combined with regular physical exercises and enough sleep.

For patients who suffered from obesity or being severely overweight is a great accomplishment when weight loss occurs. Many patients dream of this day for years before managing to get closer to the ideal weight only to notice that the appearance of their body hasn’t really improved. Of course, the fat is gone or at least most of it, but instead of fat rolls there are now skin folds that give the body an unaesthetic appearance. So, what can be done in terms of remodeling the body after weight loss?

Plastic surgery is always recommended for patients who have undergone massive weight loss to improve the appearance of their bodies after achieving a normal weight. This is important for the morale of the patient and also to increase the quality of his life and get rid forever of the signs of being obese in the past.

There are certain procedures that are performed to remodel the body after weight loss. In a vast majority of cases, the patient will undergo combined procedures, and even multiple sessions of plastic surgery set a few months apart to improve the appearance of the body.

When it comes to remodeling the body after weight loss, the main goal is to get rid of the skin sagginess and skin in excess. For this, the plastic surgeon will recommend body lifting procedures such as butt lift, breast lift, and the tummy tuck. Arm and thigh lifts can also be performed if the skin folds are present in these areas of the body as well.

Liposuction is frequently combined with body lifting procedures for patients who have lost a considerable amount of weight. You might be surprised and ask why liposuction is still necessary if the patient has already lost weight. Well, even after a massive weight loss, the patient might be left with stubborn adipose tissue in localized areas of the body. Generally speaking, even after weight loss there will be a level of fat tissue left on the flanks and the tummy that can only be removed with the help of liposuction. To improve the shape of the body after liposuction and body lifting, the plastic surgeon might also recommend fat transfer or even getting implants to enhance the features of the body.

When is revision surgery needed

Many patients don’t find out until the pre-operative meeting with the plastic surgeon that the procedure they are interested in might be followed by a similar procedure after some time. This is not always the case. Revision surgery is performed with the aim to correct the results achieved with the initial procedure or to treat a complication that occurred after the procedure was performed.

As you can see, revision surgery is needed in two cases:

1. The patient is not satisfied with the results;

2. A complication has occurred that deems as necessary another surgery.

Now, let’s discuss each case in detail.

1. Revision surgery after getting unsatisfactory results

Before anything else, you should know that the results of plastic surgery should be assessed no sooner than three to six months after the procedure. Most plastic surgeons will ask you to wait a year before properly evaluating the results of a procedure. This happens because the cicatrization process of the scars can take up to one year or more and the appearance of the scars is an important part when evaluating the results of plastic surgery.

The results achieved after surgery can be unsatisfactory due to many reasons. First, the plastic surgeon might fail to deliver the results that were discussed with the patient during the pre-operative consultation. Second, the patient might have had unrealistic expectations that were not met by the results of the procedure. Third, the post-operative development delivered unsatisfactory results. This can happen for patients who are not fully committed to following the recommendations of the plastic surgeon after the surgery.

For fat transfer procedures, the patient should not put any pressure on the areas treated. This means no sitting on the butt if fat was transferred there or lying on the front if fat was grafted into the breasts. When breasts or gluteal implants are used, the same rule applies – no lying or sitting on the front or back of the body to avoid putting pressure on the implants. If this rule is not met, the patient might be confronted with complications such as implant displacement or in the case of fat transfer, asymmetries in the areas where fat died due to the excessive pressure.

Revision surgery should be performed only after getting a second opinion and often no sooner than six months after the initial procedure was performed.

2. Revision surgery to treat a complication

When breast and butt implants are used, revision surgery can be necessary to correct a complication that occurs. For butt implants surgery, it is rarer to need revision surgery due to complications, but it can happen after breast implant surgery. Complications that can occur after breast augmentation with implants that need revision surgery would be capsular contracture or the shifting of the implants, if tear-shaped implants were used.

Make sure to discuss the need and recommendations for revision surgery in detail with the plastic surgeon before scheduling the procedure.

Is plastic surgery an option for obese people?

Is plastic surgery an option for obese people?

Introduction

Obesity affects the lives of millions of people all around the globe. Some of the effects of being obese or severely overweight are easy to notice while others are unknown to the people not confronted with the issue. Obesity is almost always associated with health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, chronic conditions, not to mention psychological disorders. Obesity is also associated with a shorter lifespan, infertility and many other problems.

In some cases, obesity affects the whole family. Obese parents raise kids that will be overweight due to the exposure they have to certain eating habits. In other cases, obesity is triggered and sustained by an emotional trauma. There are many causes of obesity but not too many solutions for it. Nowadays, the treatment for obesity is undergoing bariatric surgery or a drastic weight loss program that can combine medication with physical exercise and a strict diet. There are no magic creams or pills that can be used to get rid of the excess weight forever. Moreover, plastic surgery is not a solution for obese patients, and in this article we will discuss why this is the case.

How to lose weight

Some people want to lose weight to feel better about themselves, while others are advised to do it so they can undergo surgery. There are many cases in which obese people can’t undergo a certain surgical procedure because of their weight. In this case, the obvious solution is bariatric surgery. Many times, bariatric surgery is performed on patients who need to lose a considerable amount of weight in a short period of time to be eligible to undergo another surgical procedure that will improve their health.

Nowadays some people tend to believe that bariatric surgery is the fastest way to lose weight and everybody can do this and get rid of obesity. This is not always the reality. While bariatric surgery can certainly create the premises for weight loss to occur, it is not a guarantee that it will happen to the extent desired or that the patient will never gain weight again. When it comes to obesity, it is not only about the excess of kilograms. Most often there are traumas and psychological issues associated with excessive weight gain. These issues need to be addressed for the weight loss to occur and for the patient to be able to sustain the results achieved with bariatric surgery over time.

Bariatric surgery requires a period of preparation. During this time, the patient is advised to keep a certain diet and even lose some of the weight even before the procedure. Being able to do so before the surgery is a step toward achieving good results.

When bariatric surgery is not an option for the obese patient due to various reasons, a weight loss program can help with getting back in shape. A successful weight loss program should have a physical exercise component, a diet component, and an emotional component. Just like in the case of bariatric surgery, it is not enough to address just the physical issues. A complex weight loss program followed for a variable duration of time (between six months and up to two years or more) can lead to spectacular results.

Plastic surgery for obese patients

Obese people might see and feel that society is not completely embracing them. There is a certain level of social discrimination that is obvious. There have been numerous discussions about asking obese people to pay more for plane tickets and health insurances that can lead anyone to believe that obese people are indeed seen as different and not necessarily in the good sense of the word. People diagnosed with obesity often find it difficult to get and keep a normal job, have a normal sex life, and so on. The limitations imposed by their own weight weighs them down immensely. People confronted with obesity often show signs of depression and other emotional conditions. There are advertisements for liposuction that claim to slim down the body or a picture of a woman who is overly Photoshopped. Some people might think that plastic surgery can do just the same for obese patients, but this is not true.

When obesity is present, the patient has a considerable amount of fat tissue that is all over the body. There is subcutaneous fat, but also fat around the organs and in the abdominal cavity. Liposuction is a procedure that only targets localized fat deposits that are subcutaneous. This means that during the procedure, the plastic surgeon will use a small tube called a cannula introduced under the skin through tiny incisions and move it back and forth to dislodge and suction the fat in the area. But it can only work on the fat under the skin and on localized areas. We can’t treat the whole body with liposuction and more importantly, we can’t extract more than six or seven liters of fat during a single session as this might trigger life-threatening complications. It is also important to know that when significant amounts of fat are removed, there is a risk for skin sagginess to occur.

Performing liposuction on an obese patient won’t do him or her any good. The only results that can be achieved is a slight improvement in a certain area of the body treated with the procedure. However, there are other reasons why it is not a good idea to undergo plastic surgery if you are obese.

Surgical risks for obese patients

Obesity is often associated with cardiovascular diseases which are often a contraindication for plastic surgery. Diabetes can also be present in many cases, just like other chronic conditions that are contraindications for plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery is performed on an elective basis. This means that the patient doesn’t have to undergo plastic surgery to save or improve his life; he chooses to do so to enhance physical appearance. It is important to weigh the pros and cons of the procedure and the consequences it can have on the patient’s health and well-being. For obese patients, any surgical intervention poses a great risk. The complication rate for obese patients is exponentially increased compared to patients with a normal weight. In other words, if you are obese and contemplating undergoing plastic surgery, you should know that you are subjected to many more risks compared to patients who are close to their ideal weight.

Plastic surgery for patients after obesity

Plastic surgery is certainly not an option for obese people; however, it is the best method and the only effective one to reshape the body after weight loss. Many patients undergoing bariatric surgery or other weight loss methods discover that even after achieving their ideal weight they don’t have the body they had before gaining weight. This happens because weight loss after obesity is often associated with a considerable amount of skin sagginess. The kilograms were shed off, but the skin that was overly stretched and has lost elasticity in the process can’t get back to the initial shape and it stays hanging and forming skin folds that are uncomfortable and unaesthetic.

Conclusion

There are many plastic surgery procedures that can be performed for patients who have lost a massive amount of weight. These are breast lifts or breast reductions, brachioplasty, thigh lifts, tummy tucks and butt lifts. Other procedures can be performed with these, depending on the characteristics of the patient. Liposuction is often performed to remove stubborn adipose pockets from areas of the body difficult to target with other methods.

The recommendation is to schedule plastic surgery at least six months to a year after you have achieved the desired weight and when you know that the weight loss process is final and you are at a weight that you can sustain for a long period of time. Keep in mind that the results achieved with the help of plastic surgery can be altered if ulterior weight loss or weight gain occurs, especially if fat transfer or liposuction procedures were performed. The advice is to keep a stable weight after plastic surgery and also to avoid other external factors that can have a negative impact on the results of the procedure.

Keep in mind that plastic surgery is not an option for obese people, but it is a good choice for patients who were once obese, lost weight, and are now looking to improve their physical appearance.

Limitations of plastic surgery

With the development of modern medicine and the techniques used for plastic surgery, more and more people resort to procedures to get rid of the emotional discomfort associated with having a body or facial imperfection or simply to enhance the appearance of their bodies. Plastic surgery can provide relief from pain (breast reduction), improve the contours of the body (liposuction), and eliminate excess skin that resulted after pregnancies, weight loss or the natural aging process (tummy tuck). Plastic surgery can also be used to augment features of the body to be more proportionate and harmonious to the rest of the patient’s anatomy.

Many times, the results of plastic surgery look like the amazing work of a powerful magician. The body of the patient is completely remodeled, the changes in the anatomy are impressive, and with the boost of self-esteem that often occurs after undergoing plastic surgery, the patient feels like only the sky is the limit. However, the reality is that plastic surgery is not magic and it does have certain limitations, even when performed by an experienced, talented, board-certified plastic surgeon.

It is important for patients interested in undergoing plastic surgery that any procedure has limitations. Plastic surgery aims to enhance the appearance of the body, but it is not its aim to help the patient lose excess weight, for example. This is essential to mention as more and more people nowadays are dealing with excessive weight and looking for the fastest and easiest method to get rid of it. Plastic surgery doesn’t do this, whatever the procedure you might have in mind. Liposuction is frequently advertised as the procedure that will slim your body, and this is a possible and expected result; however, it will not eliminate all the excess pounds as it deals only with localized fat deposits and no more than six liters of fat can be safely removed during a liposuction session.

For patients seeking help from plastic surgery to improve the quality of their lives, it is also important to know that there are limitations. Plastic surgery can increase functionality and make the patient feel more at ease as a result of the elimination of excess skin (breast reduction and tummy tuck); however, plastic surgery won’t change your life for the better unless you put the effort and are open to this.

Another limitation worth considering when it comes to plastic surgery is radically transforming your body and facial characteristics. Plastic surgery doesn’t aim to change you into someone else like your favorite celebrity, but to improve your appearance to look your best. Moreover, plastic surgery works with the existing body of the patient. This means that the results that can be achieved are greatly dependent on the condition of the patient, the tonus of the skin, and the initial condition of the tissues in the areas to be treated.

Medication to avoid after plastic surgery

Plastic surgery, even performed for aesthetic purposes, is a complex surgical act that requires a preparation period as well as a great level of post-operative care. An important part of the success of the procedure and avoiding complications lies in the patient’s ability to follow the plastic surgeon’s recommendations in terms of what to do and not to do after the procedure.

Any plastic surgery procedure is followed by a recovery period. During this time, the patient is advised to do certain things and avoid others. The plastic surgeon will prescribe medication to be taken after the procedure. In a vast majority of cases, the medication prescribed is analgesic medication to reduce the intensity of pain and alleviate discomfort. This is common for all types of plastic surgery procedures. Moreover, because the surgical act is often associated with a certain level of swelling and bruising, the plastic surgeon can also recommend Arnica Montana supplements or creams to be used during the recovery period. After complex surgeries where tissues have been sectioned, the surgeon can also prescribe antibiotics treatment. The antibiotics have a preventive role in helping the patient avoid a potential infection that could delay the recovery process. It is important to take the pills as per the surgeon’s recommendation.

However, aside from the medication that is recommended, there is also medication to be avoided. Many patients ask what medication they should avoid after undergoing plastic surgery, and this is an issue that should be discussed in detail with the plastic surgeon during the pre-operative consultation. There are patients with health conditions that require certain medication to be taken before and after the surgery. Make sure the plastic surgeon is aware of this and ask if you can continue the treatment after the procedure.

One of the risks associated with any surgical act is the risk of excessive bleeding during and after the procedure. The plastic surgeon needs to take all the necessary precautions to minimize this risk as it can trigger further complications for the patient and also delay the healing process.

A medication that should be avoided both before and after the procedure is anti-inflammatory medication, especially aspirin. These pills can trigger excessive hemorrhaging during and after the surgery. Taking this type of anti-inflammatory medication shortly after the procedure can also lead to a delay in the healing of the tissues affected by the surgery.

Aside from this, you should also consult your doctor in case you want to take natural supplements. Some of them can also trigger excessive bleeding and interfere with the recovery process, so make sure you get the plastic surgeon’s consent before taking any kind of supplements. To avoid taking medication by mistake during the recovery period, move the medication in a different area of the house from where you used to keep them.

The Importance Of Avoiding Certain Medication Before Plastic Surgery

The Importance Of Avoiding Certain Medication Before Plastic Surgery

Introduction

The decision to undergo surgery is rarely a simple decision, especially when it comes to plastic surgery. Unlike other procedures performed to save the patient’s life or improve health, plastic surgery is commonly performed with aesthetic goals in mind. Plastic surgery is elective, and in a vast majority of cases, the procedures are performed long in advance to give the patient time to prepare properly. The preparation for plastic surgery is an important stage of the process. Any surgery performed for cosmetic purposes requires mental and physical preparation.

In this article, we will discuss the preparation for plastic surgery and the importance to avoid certain medication before the procedure.

Getting ready for plastic surgery

There are certain things you need to do to make sure you are well-prepared to undergo plastic surgery. The preparation stage is important both to ensure a fast and smooth recovery period and to achieve the best results possible.

Get to know the plastic surgeon

When undergoing plastic surgery, you choose the plastic surgeon. This means that you need to find someone who you can trust with more than your aesthetic appearance, but also with your health and well-being. The plastic surgeon needs to be well-versed in the practice of plastic surgery, board-certified, but also with a deep knowledge of aesthetics and the human body and someone you have great communication with.

Often, patients undergoing plastic surgery achieve unsatisfactory results due to poor communication with the plastic surgeon. This can be avoided if you find someone who you can talk honestly and openly with even from the first meeting. Communicating your goals in clear words is important, and it will also give the plastic surgeon the opportunity to tell you if your expectations are reasonable and can be accomplished. You can research the plastic surgeon online and find all the information you can about him, then schedule a meeting to see what his recommendations are for your particular case. During the pre-operative consultation, the plastic surgeon will also provide you with a list of medication to avoid before undergoing the procedure and ask about any current treatment you might be taking.

Get all the details about the surgery

Most patients interested in undergoing plastic surgery will research online about the details of the surgery and how it is usually performed. However, it is only during the consultation with the plastic surgeon that you will get the whole picture of what the procedure entails. Each procedure is customized to the patient. This means that there are no two breast augmentations alike, even if they use the same kind of implant. The results of the procedure as well as the surgical plan to be followed are greatly dependent on the initial anatomy of the patient and the condition of the tissues, as well as the goals he or she wants to achieve with the surgery.

Knowing what will happen during the procedure is important to reduce the pre-operative anxiety that can occur before plastic surgery. Moreover, you will get information about how you need to behave before the procedure to avoid complications. For example, when talking about medication to be avoided before plastic surgery, it is a well-known fact that certain medication, as well as natural supplements, can trigger post-op complications such as excessive bleeding and blood clotting. The risk of developing these complications can be significantly reduced if the patient understands how taking these medications can influence the post-op development.

Share your full medical history

It is crucial to the success of your surgery for the plastic surgeon to know all the medical aspects of your condition, especially ones related to chronic conditions such as pulmonary conditions or diabetes. Nowadays, most plastic surgeons will operate on patients with chronic conditions or patients under treatment, but it is essential for them to know what they are dealing with to better prepare for the surgery. Moreover, the plastic surgeon and the anesthetist should also know if you have different allergies to medication or if you ever had an allergic reaction to anesthesia in the past.

If you are taking treatment before the procedure, chances are your plastic surgeon will work with your doctor and reduce, increase, or stop treatment for a few weeks before and after the surgery, depending from case to case.

Make sure to talk to the plastic surgeon about the supplements and vitamins you currently take. Some of these can cause complications. The plastic surgeon will tell you what medication can be taken without problems and what is important to avoid before plastic surgery.

Importance of avoiding certain medication before surgery

Many patients want to know if there are medications that need to be avoided before or after a plastic surgery procedure. Depending on the type of procedure to be performed and the anesthesia used, the plastic surgeon might ask you to stop or reduce the quantity of medication that you normally take.

Nowadays more and more patients take natural supplements. While these natural products can be beneficial for all sorts of health conditions, taking them before plastic surgery can be dangerous and increase the risks of developing a complication during or after the operation.

Generally speaking, if you haven’t discussed the issue with the plastic surgeon during the pre-operative consultation and you can’t get in touch with him before the procedure, the recommendation is to avoid any type of natural supplements two weeks before the date of the surgery. Among the natural supplements that should be stopped or avoided before surgery are:

–   Ginger: It is a good anti-spastic and anti-inflammatory medication. Ginger supplements are often used to prevent nausea and for appetite. While it can be beneficial to fight post-operative nausea, using ginger supplements can interfere with blood coagulation and can also interfere with cardiac medication and anti-coagulant medication.

– Ginkgo Biloba: It is used as an antioxidant and blood circulation activator. It has an anticoagulant effect that can trigger excessive bleeding during or after surgery.

–   Ginseng: Also known for its anticoagulant properties, it is used to improve physical and cognitive performance, as well as mood and metabolism. It can alter the effects of cardiac, hypertensive and anti-diabetic medication, so it should be avoided at least two weeks before plastic surgery.

Aside from natural supplements, there are other types of medications to be avoided before plastic surgery, such as:

–   Medication containing aspirin and certain types of anti-inflammatory medications: These types of pills have a negative effect on the ability of the blood to coagulate and increases the risk of intra-operative and post-operative bleeding. For at least two weeks before surgery, you should check the indications on any pill that you take, even if a prescription was not necessary to get them, to make sure they don’t contain aspirin and they don’t have an anti-coagulant effect. If you are experiencing a minor discomfort or pain during those two weeks before the procedure, ask your plastic surgeon what medication is safe to take.

–   Birth control pills: Treatment with birth control pills needs to be stopped a month before the procedure. The patient is advised to find and use another contraceptive period during this time as birth control pills interfere with blood coagulation and can trigger the formation of blood clots after the procedure. This is a severe complication that can be avoided by not taking birth control pills close to the surgery date.

Conclusion

It is important for the patient to understand that the preparation stage is an important part of the process of achieving satisfactory results after plastic surgery and avoiding severe complications. The details of the operative plan and the list of dos and don’ts before and after plastic surgery will be discussed with the plastic surgeon during the pre-operative consultation.

Certain medication, as well as natural supplements, taken in the two weeks before the procedure can increase the risk of the patient developing complications. Taking certain anti-inflammatory medication and especially ones containing aspirin can trigger excessive bleeding during and after surgery due to their anticoagulant effects. At the same time, not interrupting birth control treatment a month before the procedure can cause blood clots that are a severe and life-threatening complication.

Make sure to discuss the issue of what medication to avoid before plastic surgery in detail with your plastic surgeon.
