Should I Take Vitamins Before Plastic Surgery?

Introduction

So you are close to your plastic surgery date. You have seen your surgeon once or twice during pre-operative consultations that have allowed you to get a good idea of what you are doing and what to expect after the procedure. He also talked about the possible complications of surgery and how to properly prepare for the surgery day.

In my practice, quite a significant number of patients looking to undergo plastic surgery ask whether it is necessary to take vitamins and minerals before or after the procedure. In this article, we will discuss natural supplements, minerals, and vitamins before and after plastic surgery.

Medication before plastic surgery

Even if plastic surgery is performed on healthy patients, they might be currently taking different medication such as analgesics or anti-inflammatory medicine. It is important for the patient to avoid aspirin-based medication for at least two weeks before the procedure as they might induce excessive bleeding. Anti-inflammatory medication such as Motrin and Voltaren should be avoided for the same period of time.

If in doubt about your current medication, consult your doctor or plastic surgeon. Some new products or other drugs may also contain aspirin. It is up to you to check whether the medications you are taking contain it or not. Also, make it a priority to contact your plastic surgeon immediately if you ingested any of these medications two weeks prior to surgery. He might deem it as necessary to reschedule your procedure. Taking anti-flu medication before surgery is also to be avoided. You can however take certain medications safely, such as Atasol and Tylenol. They do not contain aspirin and can therefore be used to relieve pain.

If you are following birth control treatment or taking any other medication for an existing health condition such as diabetes, make sure to tell your surgeon about it.

Natural supplements before plastic surgery

As a general rule, your plastic surgeon will advise you to avoid any natural, homeopathic vitamin products before the surgery because despite the fact that they are natural, they can still have properties that can induce excessive bleeding or cause a delay in the healing process.

Keep in mind that surgery is a traumatic experience for the body. Whether yours is an elective surgery like cosmetic surgery or is performed to correct the effects of an illness or injury, the bottom line is that any surgery is difficult on the body. Even from the time before the procedure, you will notice that one of your great concerns will be how to heal and recover more quickly so you can resume your normal activities.

Of course, much of the postoperative healing is to rest sufficiently. Another great part is to do light exercises that the plastic surgeon prescribes, as well as often change your body position to allow the muscles to strengthen and function normally. And finally, there is only one very important part that many people forget about: nutrition.

As we have mentioned before, undergoing a surgical intervention is not a walk in the park for your body. This means you need a strong immune system that will help you go through the operation and the recovery process while avoiding unnecessary complications. We all know that nutrition is an important part of a good immune system. In fact, the foods you eat and your choice of drinks, both before and after surgery, play a huge role in how quickly you recover.

Even if it might seem that taking vitamins before surgery is a good way to prepare your body for the trauma, your plastic surgeon might actually advise you the exact opposite, as in not to take any vitamins before the surgery or shortly after. It is a well-known fact nowadays that some vitamins have effects on blood clotting and excessive bleeding. Vitamin E, garlic, Ginkgo Biloba, and Ginseng should be avoided for one, preferably two weeks before the procedure is scheduled.

Aside from the vitamins and supplements that can interfere with blood coagulation, we also have products that can interfere with the effects of anesthesia. Usually, these are natural supplements that aim to deliver relief from stress, anxiety and induce sleep, such as Valerian Root for example. Avoid these products for at least a week prior to surgery and make sure to discuss this issue with your plastic surgeon.

However, there are some supplements and vitamins that your plastic surgeon might recommend before the surgery as they have positive effects on wound healing and reducing the swelling. These are vitamin A and C and Arnica Montana.

Keep in mind that any intake of medication or natural supplements, even in the form of infusions, should be discussed in detail with your plastic surgeon. I usually advise my patients to continue with these vitamins or at least vitamin C and Arnica Montana for a week or two after the surgery, if not more. Arnica has proven to be amazing in helping reduce inflammation, and vitamin C is a good antioxidant that will help with the healing process.

Preparation before plastic surgery is just as important as the healing process. To make sure you have a fast recovery, try these tips:

  1. Take supplements

After surgery, the body has different needs to sustain the healing process. This means that aside from nutritious and balanced meals, you can also supplement your intake of amino acids and Omega 3 fatty acids. However, research has shown that omega 3 acids might be related to excessive bleeding, so make sure to check with your plastic surgeon whether you are allowed to take supplements or not.

  1. Take 1000 mg of vitamin C per day

Many experts say we should take between 500-1000 mg of vitamin C per day as it is a great boost for the immune system and a reliable anti-oxidant fighting against the damage done by external factors. Vitamin C is essential for wound healing after surgery as it is involved in collagen production. This means that unsightly scarring might be avoided with a good dose of vitamin C taken daily.

  1. Fiber supplements

It is common knowledge that most patients will experience constipation after surgery. To avoid this and to allow your metabolism to regain its functions as soon as possible, you can try fiber supplements if you know you are not getting enough fibers from your meals. Make sure to drink plenty of water when taking fibers, otherwise the constipation might get worse.

  1. Go for iron-enhanced drinks and snacks

Bleeding during surgery might deplete the iron reserves in the body, this is why it is important to try supplementing your diet with iron. There are multiple sources of iron, among the most common being spinach, red meats, drinks with added iron, and also protein snacks.

  1. Drink plenty of water

Keeping hydrated is essential after any type of surgery. More than the benefits we all know, water will keep your bladder working, hence helping you avoid potential urinary infections that can occur after surgery.

  1. Have regular, light meals

Healthy, balanced and regular meals are a thing you should try before and after your surgery. Heavy meals can have a negative impact on the body’s system, and this is something you want to avoid.

Conclusion

Nutrition before and after plastic surgery is important to have a fast and uneventful recovery period. To make sure you are on the safe side, make it a priority to discuss with the plastic surgeon all medication, natural supplements, vitamins, and minerals you might be taking before the procedure is scheduled.

Your plastic surgeon will advise you to stop taking certain supplements, especially the ones containing garlic, vitamin E, and valerian roots as they can cause blood issues such as excessive bleeding or blood clots and also interfere with anesthesia. However, certain supplements and vitamins such as vitamin A, C, and Arnica Montana can certainly prove beneficial if taken before and after plastic surgery. As a precautious measure, check the labels on the products carefully before administering them and contact your plastic surgeon if you notice any abnormal effects.

Vitamin C is a great antioxidant that will boost your immune system. Arnica Montana will help decrease the swelling and inflammation that can occur after plastic surgery, and Vitamin A is essential for the production of collagen, hence a great help for wound healing.

The effects of smoking on healing and recovery after plastic surgery

Introduction

We are all aware of the adverse effects of smoking not only on our health, the beauty of the skin, but even the health of people around us that are affected by second-hand smoking. Moreover, it is important for people looking to undergo plastic surgery to know that smoking can also have a negative effect on wound healing after the procedure.

Avoiding smoking is one of the most commonly known rules to follow before and after a plastic surgery intervention. Because cosmetic surgeries are performed on an elective basis and on healthy patients, the patient has enough time to quit smoking a few weeks before the procedure to ensure a faster and uneventful recovery period.

Smoking and wound healing

There are several studies that demonstrate the incidence rate of post-surgical complications occurring much higher in patients who smoke compared to patients who don’t smoke. Delayed wound healing and infections of the surgical site, as well as developing hypertrophic scars, are some of the complications that have been observed to affect smokers more.

To get a better understand of what smoking does, a study performed in 2003 made the assessment on 228 surgical wounds and showed that the rate of infection was 12% in smokers and 2% in non-smokers and that the rate of wound dehiscence was 12% in smokers while there were no cases in non-smokers. Other studies have demonstrated that people who smoke a lot (one pack of cigarettes per day or more) have a significantly increased risk of developing tissue necrosis.

The effects smoking has on healing after surgery is not news. We have been aware of them for a long period of time. However, when it comes to plastic surgery, we can really reduce the effects by quitting smoking for as long as possible before and after the surgery. I always tell my patients that it is not worth jeopardizing the results of their intervention with smoking.

Delayed wound healing, wound dehiscence, and surgical wound infection can trigger even more severe complications and lead to scarring that can significantly reduce the aesthetic appeal of the results after the intervention.

Why does smoking affect the recovery process after surgery?

Before anything else, we should mention that more than 4,000 substances have been identified as present in tobacco smoke, and some of them are known to impact the healing process. Among them, we can mention nicotine and carbon monoxide, which are the most well-known components of cigarettes. It is the carbon monoxide that doesn’t allow the tissue to get proper oxygenation and also causes poor blood circulation. Nicotine is also known for its vaso-constrictive effect that causes a decrease in blood flow and an unsatisfactory supply of nutrients that are required and mandatory for the healing of the tissues.

Many people are not aware of the fact that having a single cigarette will have a vasoconstrictor effect on your body for at least one and a half hours, and smoking a pack of cigarettes will lead to a full day hypoxia.

Other studies have shown that the production of collagen is decreased in people who smoke. Apparently, the fibroblasts that create collagen are disrupted by tobacco. Even the mere exposure to tobacco smoke during the healing process can have negative impacts on wound healing as it reduces the capacity to contract which is essential for creating aesthetic looking scars.

Should I quit smoking before plastic surgery?

Many people wonder if there is any point in quitting smoking before the surgery as they have been heavy smokers for years. They tend to believe that after years of tobacco exposure, there is no benefit that can come from quitting smoking for a few weeks. To prove them wrong, there have been several studies performed that show that the pre-operative cessation of smoking has a considerable positive effect on the healing process and also reduces the rate of complications that can occur, mainly infections.

Numerous studies claim that avoiding surgery at least 21 days before an intervention is optimal. However, if the patient can stop smoking 6 to 8 eight weeks prior to surgery, he can avoid the unpleasant scarring and have a faster recovery process.

Some of my patients complain about the fact that it is impossible for them to quit smoking prior to surgery. My advice for them is to seek help from their doctor. Moreover, even a reduction in a number of the cigarettes smoked per day can have a beneficial effect on the overall result. When it comes to undergoing a complex surgical intervention (with significant incisions and skin excision such as the tummy tuck, for example), I advise the patient to avoid quitting smoking right after the procedure as cough fits can be triggered and this is something to be avoided until the surgical wound has healed.

Smoking is to be avoided at all costs, both before and after a plastic surgery intervention. The pre-operative period is the best time to start a withdrawal program. It is also important to know that the use of nicotine patches or gums during the abstinence period hasn’t been proven to cause damaging effects on wound healing.

I also had patients who will just quit smoking after their intervention. This is not a good idea. Before anything else, the recovery period after plastic surgery can be a stressful time for the patient. It can take a few days until the patient can resume his day-to-day activities, and after some interventions the patient will be required to avoid sitting in certain positions or performing certain movements. A certain level of discomfort and pain can also be experienced during this time as normal side effects of the surgical intervention. Trying to quit smoking with all of these happening at the same time might seem like a terribly difficult task. You might find smoking good for stress release as studies have shown that post-surgery actually increases the level of stress in the body, hence having a tendency to smoke even more.

The recommendation is to quit smoking at least three weeks before and after, preferably six weeks, if possible. The sooner you start with the withdrawal period, the better it will be for the results of the intervention.

Quitting smoking can be a very difficult thing to do, but keep in mind that you are undergoing surgery to improve the aspect of your body. You will look better, feel better, and benefit from a boost of self-esteem. Maybe this is a good time to drop bad habits and celebrate your new, beautiful body.

Plenty of studies have shown that the skin tends to wrinkle and show signs of aging sooner in smokers that people who do not smoke. There is not much point seeking help from plastic surgery to maintain your youth for longer when you are actively working against it by smoking.

Conclusion

The effects of smoking on the healing and recovery process after surgery have been documented in multiple studies that have been performed in the last two decades. There is irrefutable proof that smoking leads to complications that could otherwise be avoided. Among the most common complications that can be experienced by smokers are wound dehiscence, infections, and delayed wound healing. All of them lead to unsightly scarring, which is something we all try to avoid, especially after cosmetic surgery.

Even the exposure to tobacco smoke can trigger complications, so it is better to avoid it altogether. Research has shown that using nicotine patches has no damaging effect on wound healing, so these are safe to use when going through the withdrawal period.

It is recommended to quit smoking at least three weeks before the surgery, but preferably six weeks or up to three months in advance. The components in tobacco smoke, mainly carbon monoxide and nicotine, have negative effects on blood circulation and oxygenation of the tissues. The sooner you quit, the better your chances to avoid complications after the procedure.

Sculpting The Whole Body With Liposuction

There are some areas of the body where fat can be stored and be difficult to remove. Through exercise and proper diet, a person can drastically change the body’s silhouette, but there can still be some problem areas left. Here is where the liposuction procedure can be very useful.

Liposuction is the process of removing excess fat in different areas of the body. Although physical exercise and a proper diet can help remove most of the fat in the body, there are still some areas where stubborn fat dwells. Through liposuction, the fat in these areas can be removed in order to give a more sculpted look for the body. The liposuction procedure only targets the fat that is found subcutaneously or those under the skin. The fat that is found around the organs (visceral fat) can only be removed through exercise.

It is possible to use liposuction in various parts of the body that have a lot of stubborn fat. Among the areas where it can be used include the abdomen, arms, chest, bra roll, waist, flanks, hips, thighs, knees, buttocks, and even the face. When the excess amount of fat is removed in these areas, a better-contoured body will result.

The removal of fat can help show a more sculpted body because the muscles under the fat will be more obvious once the fat is removed. Although fat can be removed, it is also important not to remove all of it. In order to have a well-sculpted body, a patient must choose the surgeon who knows how to properly sculpt the body by removing just the right amount of fat. Too much fat removal can also result in an unsightly figure, so the surgeons have to be very careful in finding the right balance.

As the fat is removed from the body, the skin will feel loose because the space previously taken up by the fat is now empty. It is possible for the skin to shrink because it is elastic, but if much of the fat is taken, it is also possible that plenty of loose skin will be produced. For people who already have loose skin and still have fat to be removed, the liposuction procedure may not be enough to give them the body they are aiming for. It would be best to inquire with a certified and experienced surgeon so they can suggest the right procedures for you.

Liposuction of the different areas of the body can be done using a variety of techniques. For larger areas, the traditional and tumescent technique can be used. With this technique, a small incision is made to provide entry for the cannula tube that will be used. There are also other liposuction techniques that can be used on large areas of the body, as well as smaller areas in the body. These techniques make use of laser or ultrasound energy in order to damage the fat cells so that it can easily be reabsorbed and removed by the body. Several sessions of this kind of liposuction procedure might be needed in order to see its effects fully.

Common Side Effects Of Thigh Lift

One common part of the body that seems to be problematic for many women is the thigh area. It can store fat but can be very resistant to the effects of exercise and diet, even after some weight has already been lost. Some people who have already lost a lot of weight can still look very heavy because of how their thighs appear. This is why people look for other ways on how they can remedy their thigh problem.

A way to make the thighs look better is via plastic surgery. The surgery that slims down the thighs is called a thigh lift procedure. It helps produce firmer upper legs by removing excess skin, fat, and tissue. There are different techniques that can be used by the surgeon depending on the type of thighs that a patient has. After the surgery, there can be some side effects that can be felt during recovery. By knowing these side effects, patients can prepare for them beforehand so they will be more comfortable during recovery.

One of the common side effects of the surgery is nausea. This side effect is usually felt immediately after the surgery, and the main cause of it is the different chemicals, medication, and anesthesia used during surgery. This feeling eventually disappears in a few hours or days. If a patient remains nauseous after a few days, it would be best to bring it to the attention of the surgeon who did the procedure.

Another common side effect is bruising and swelling of the area. Although this can also be uncomfortable and very unsightly, it will heal and gradually disappear, depending on how fast the body can heal. The site of the bruising is not necessarily on the site of incision but much further. The swelling appears much closer to the area worked on and can remain for several months after the surgery. Swelling results from the accumulation of fluid due to the surgery, while the bruising is due to blood. Either can be reabsorbed by the body on its own, but some can also be drained if there is really a large accumulation. The pain caused by the swelling can be dealt with through pain relievers.

Patients are required by their doctors to move their legs after the surgery to make sure the formation of blood clots is avoided. This side effect is observed in patients who remain in a stationary position for a very long time. When the patient doesn’t move their legs or walk around, the circulation of blood is affected. This is why exercises are needed to help make sure that even if the patient doesn’t fully make use of their legs, they can still make sure that the blood circulates properly through them.

Feeling numbness in the area is also a possible side effect. Damage to the nerves is possible during the surgery, but it can also heal and repair itself if the damage is not severe. This results in temporary numbness of the thighs after the procedure.
