What is the ideal age to undergo plastic surgery?

Introduction

The number of people undergoing plastic surgery has never been so unprecedented. Over the last ten years, the number of people undergoing plastic surgery in the US has witnessed a huge boost. Women are particularly sensitive about their aesthetic appearance, and as such, more than 95 percent of people undergoing plastic surgery in the US comprise women.

One of the common questions many first-time patients ask is whether there is an ideal age to undergo plastic surgery. The age requirement for plastic surgery differs from one procedure to another; however, most people who undergo plastic surgery are aged above 30 years. In this article, we’ll discuss what the ideal age to undergo plastic surgery is.

The importance of the ideal age to undergo plastic surgery

Aging is a powerful factor that changes the aesthetic appearance of the human body. We cannot prevent aging from affecting our bodies. When pregnancy and weight changes work in combination with aging, the body’s aesthetic qualities get a serious dent. Saggy abdomen, poorly shaped breasts, a smaller or flatter butt, and stubborn fat pockets in different areas of the body are often the result of aging, pregnancy, genetic factors, and weight changes.

When the body loses its aesthetic attraction, it can affect your quality of life, and you may experience lower self-confidence. In order to restore your youthful appearance, you may consider plastic surgery. Plastic surgery is an effective treatment, which can also restore your self-esteem. However, there are certain factors that should be taken into account when considering plastic surgery. One of those factors is the ideal age to undergo a certain plastic surgery intervention.

There is a minimum age requirement for most plastic surgery procedures, and you will achieve better and safer outcomes with the procedure only if you meet the age requirement. The ideal age to undergo a certain plastic surgery procedure is when you meet the minimum age requirement and have certain aesthetic flaws in your body that are affecting your life in negative ways.

The age requirement for plastic surgery

Typically, there is a minimum age requirement for most plastic surgery procedures. However, there isn’t any maximum age requirement. The fact is that most people seek plastic surgery interventions in their old age so that they can look young. For majority of plastic surgery procedures, the minimum age requirement is 18 years. For others, it is 22 years.

If you are aged above 18 years, the ideal time to undergo plastic surgery is when you feel your aesthetic appearance is not in tune with the modern beauty standards and the condition affects your self-esteem in negative ways. However, there are other factors that come into play when you consider plastic surgery.

For example, you should ideally undergo plastic surgery when your family is complete and you have no plan to get pregnant again. Pregnancy has the tendency to affect your body in negative ways, thereby nullifying the aesthetic improvements achieved via plastic surgery. During pregnancy, your body experiences hormonal changes, which in turn introduce physical changes to your body.

Plastic surgery for teenagers: Teenagers are particularly more image-conscious because of the hormonal changes their bodies go through. They take even trivial aesthetic flaws very seriously, and even some teenagers who are in good appearance think they look aesthetically unappealing. This is all the result of hormonal surges. As such, plastic surgery is performed on teenagers in extremely rare cases.

Also, the body continuously grows and develops during the teenage years. Performing plastic surgery on the body when the body is developing does not deliver good aesthetic results. Your body should be stable in terms of growth in order for you to achieve satisfactory outcomes with plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery for seniors: While there is no harm in undergoing plastic surgery in your 60s and 70s, the risks would be greater for you because aging often affects your overall health. If you have poor health and go under the knife in your old age, the risk of anesthetic reaction and other complications would be relatively greater for you. As such, old patients are required to first get medical clearance from their primary health care provider in order to qualify for plastic surgery.

You should keep in mind that you cannot get the body of a 30-year-old person by undergoing plastic surgery in your 60s or 70s. However, you can get the body of a 40-year-old person by going under the knife in your 60s or 70s. The good news is that plastic surgery is now safer even for seniors, thanks to the innovations in plastic surgery technology and techniques.

When seeking plastic surgery in your old or young age, you must be sure to share your complete medical history with the plastic surgeon. Health issues like diabetes, heart disease, respiratory problems, and blood disorders increase the risks for you. Special measures have to be taken to ensure your safety during the surgery if you are suffering from serious health issues.

What is the ideal age for different plastic surgery procedures?

Buttock augmentation: Buttock augmentation is a major surgery that makes your smaller or flatter butt bigger, shapelier, and voluptuous. The ideal age to undergo buttock augmentation is after 18 years of age. If you are aged 18 years and have aesthetic flaws in your butt which is affecting your quality of life, you may consider buttock augmentation.

However, if you are planning to get pregnant, you should postpone your plan to undergo buttock augmentation. Pregnancy affects the results of plastic surgery in negative ways. If the aesthetic flaws in your butt are not affecting your self-esteem, you should avoid undergoing the surgery.

Most patients undergo buttock augmentation in their 30s to 50s. Patients aged above 50 years also undergo the intervention so they can appear youthful and aesthetically appealing. In fact, it is in old age that women need buttock augmentation. The procedure improves the shape of their butt, which in turn enhances their overall physical appearance.

Breast augmentation: Breast augmentation is yet another major surgery that is used to add projection to and increase the size of your breasts. If you are aged above 20 years and your breasts are smaller or flatter and the condition is resulting in lower self-esteem, it is your ideal age to undergo breast augmentation. However, you would be required to meet other prerequisites to qualify for the procedure. Your breasts can be augmented through breast implants or fat transfer to the breasts.

Again, pregnancy has the tendency to affect the results of breast augmentation in negative ways. Ideally, you should undergo breast augmentation when you are done with pregnancy and have no plan to have more children. Seniors can also enhance their aesthetic appearance by undergoing breast augmentation. It would make them appear sexier, younger, and beautiful.

Tummy tuck: Tummy tuck is a major plastic surgery that entails relatively greater risks. The procedure is an effective treatment for a saggy abdomen. The abdomen mostly becomes saggy as a result of multiple pregnancies, weight changes, gravity, and aging. These factors come into play mostly after 30 years of age, and as such the ideal age to undergo the tummy tuck is after 30 years of age. The minimum age requirement for the tummy tuck is 18 years.

Pregnancy and weight changes will nullify the results achieved via the tummy tuck; therefore, patients should be sure to maintain a stable weight and avoid getting pregnant after the procedure. If you plan to have more children, you should postpone your plan to undergo the tummy tuck.

Liposuction: Liposuction is the most popular and common plastic surgery procedure performed in the US. The surgery involves the removal of the stubborn fat pockets from different areas of the body with the goal to contour your body. The minimum age to undergo the intervention is 18 years; however, the ideal age to achieve better results with liposuction is after 22 years of age.

If you are aged 18 or more and have stubborn fat pockets in localized areas of the body like the abdomen, sides, flanks, and thighs, you may consider liposuction. However, you should go under the knife only if the aesthetic flaws in your body are affecting your self-esteem. Again, pregnancy will determine the reoccurrence of the development of stubborn fat pockets in your body. Ideally, you should undergo the operation if you have no more plans to get pregnant.

Conclusion

It is important for patients to understand that there is an ideal age to undergo each plastic surgery procedure; however, that doesn’t mean that if you cross that age, you would no longer qualify for the procedure. The fact is that when you undergo a certain procedure when you really need it, you will achieve better aesthetic results and be satisfied with the outcomes. However, that doesn’t mean going under the knife in your old age will not deliver good results. The results would still be satisfactory, but you should keep your expectations realistic and reasonable in terms of your age.

Blood Tests: Mandatory Before Plastic Surgery?

 Introduction

Plastic surgery is more and more in demand nowadays. But what some patients fail to understand is that even if it is performed on an elective basis and for cosmetic purposes, plastic surgery is still surgery and entails certain risks and complications. To reduce the rate of risks occurring, certain tests are mandatory before the procedure is performed. Some plastic surgeons will perform the procedure requiring only minimal medical examination beforehand, while others are more concerned with the well-being of the patient and will ask the patient to undergo thorough examinations just to make sure they are eligible for the surgery. Aside from blood tests, there will be other medical tests performed depending on the procedure that will be done.

How to prepare for the blood test before plastic surgery:

If you are scheduled for your blood tests, then you need to get ready. To get reliable results, there are a few rules and recommendations you should follow before going to your appointment.

  1. If the medical staff will ask you to come on an empty stomach, make sure not to eat anything after 7 pm the day before the procedure. There should be at least 12 hours of fasting before your blood tests.
  2. Don’t drink alcohol or a lot of carbonated beverages the days prior to your blood test.
  3. Don’t drink coffee at least 20-24 hours prior to your test.
  4. Don’t eat foods that are fried or over processed the days before your test.
  5. Do not smoke or drink coffee the morning you’re having your blood test taken.
  6. Avoid intense physical activity for at least a day before your test.
  7. Drink plenty of water a few days before your test.
  8. Sit and relax for at least 10 to 15 minutes before your blood is sampled.
  9. Don’t take any medication or natural supplements a few days before the test, unless you discussed it beforehand with your plastic surgeon.
  10. Make sure to let the medical staff know any medication you are currently taking.

Following these simple indications will ensure that your blood tests will take place under the best possible conditions.

When are blood tests necessary before plastic surgery?

If you need an operation, you will need to undergo blood and urine tests beforehand. These analyses can be useful if you have certain diseases or other health problems. For example, if you have a blood disorder, a test may indicate if you are at risk for excessive bleeding during surgery. The tests will allow your plastic surgeon to properly prepare for your intervention and take all the necessary measures to ensure your safety and well-being at all times.

Most people in good health think they do not need these tests, especially before a surgery that involves little risk. But there is no way for the surgeon to be sure about your health condition unless undergoing these tests. Many healthy people undergo routine laboratory testing before surgery, and the results of these tests rarely influence the surgeon’s decision to operate or determine the safety of surgery.

Blood and urine tests are very safe, but they can also cause false alarms. This can cause anxiety, lead to further testing, and even delay your surgery. For example, an analysis may be followed by monitoring, ultrasound, biopsy or other examination that will expose you to radiation, as in the case of X-rays or scans. However, it is important to keep in mind that it is in your best interest to undergo all these tests and know you are a good candidate for the procedure than go ahead with the surgery not knowing what the risks are exactly.

If you have certain illnesses or other health problems, or if your medical history demonstrates the need for blood tests, they can give your doctor relevant information. For example:

  • If you bruise easily or if you are using medication that thins up the blood, if you had excessive bleeding during a previous intervention or dental procedure, or if you have an antecedent of blood disorders in your family, you will certainly need a blood test to check if your blood coagulates normally.
  • If you suffer from a disease like diabetes, you will need a test to check if your disease is well controlled.
  • If you are tired most of the time, you might suffer from anemia. The blood tests will indicate this, and the plastic surgeon will give you an iron supplement after the procedure.
  • Women of childbearing age should take a pregnancy test.

The blood tests that are mandatory to be performed before a plastic surgery intervention should reveal if you have a blood disorder, anemia, diabetes or an infection in the body. Even the slightest sign of infection can make your plastic surgeon postpone your procedure until you are in a better health condition.

Depending on the results of the tests, your plastic surgeon may monitor your condition more closely during or after the procedure. Sometimes surgery may be delayed until the problem is controlled. Or, your plastic surgeon may opt for another surgical technique or another mode of anesthesia.

Operative and post-operative conduct are dependent on the results of your blood tests, and this is why it is important to treat them with care. Moreover, the tests might reveal a condition that needs monitoring that you might not have even known you have.

How to prepare for surgery

Your plastic surgeon and the medical team responsible for the preoperative period will review your medical history. They will recommend the necessary blood tests that are required to be taken before your intervention. Make sure to:

  • Ask your doctor to check your blood tests already done in the last four to six months. It is rare to have to repeat an analysis if your state of health has not changed.
  • Make a list of all your supplements, medications and vitamins.
  • Report any new symptoms, even if they occur after your assessment.

The following steps may make your surgery safer:

Quit smoking, at least for a few weeks before and after the surgery. It is important not to smoke the day of your surgery. The earlier you stop, the more you reduce the risk of developing complications. If you need help to stop smoking, talk to your doctor.

Ask to keep your own blood in reserve, if possible. You can have a quantity of blood collected and have it placed in reserve before surgery. This way, if you need a blood transfusion, you will receive your own blood, which will reduce the risk of infection or adverse reactions.

Find out about pain management. Ask your doctor if you should stop taking aspirin or other medication prior to surgery and ask about pain management after the operation.

Ask for help. Ask someone to take you to the hospital, stay with you the first night, and pick you up at the end of your stay. You can also ask someone to accompany you during your medical appointments, especially if you are stressed, to make sure you remember all the instructions and all the necessary information. Find out more about the recovery period.

Conclusion

It is important to understand that blood tests are mandatory before your plastic surgery intervention, especially if the procedure requires general anesthesia and is lengthy and complex with significant incisions. Your plastic surgeon needs to know beforehand if you have an infection, anemia, a blood disorder, or other conditions that would require specific attention during the operation.

A pregnancy test should be mandatory for all women who are at childbearing age, especially if they are not on birth control pills.

Depending on the results of your blood tests, the plastic surgeon might decide to change the course of the procedure, choose another operative method, and even the anesthesia type. This is for your own safety and well-being.

Make sure to discuss with the surgeon your family medical history, current or past medication, and even vitamins and minerals if you are taking any. This will help him recommend the most suitable tests and examinations that you need to undergo prior to your plastic surgery intervention.

While many patients think this is an unnecessary step that they need to take before a cosmetic procedure, from my experience I can tell you that it can save a lot of trouble and make the procedure much safer for the patient. Excessive bleeding caused by a blood disorder that was not discovered before the procedure can have life-threatening complications for the patient.

Common Side Effects Of Thigh Lift

One common part of the body that seems to be problematic for many women is the thigh area. It can store fat but can be very resistant to the effects of exercise and diet, even after some weight has already been lost. Some people who have already lost a lot of weight can still look very heavy because of how their thighs appear. This is why people look for other ways on how they can remedy their thigh problem.

A way to make the thighs look better is via plastic surgery. The surgery that slims down the thighs is called a thigh lift procedure. It helps produce firmer upper legs by removing excess skin, fat, and tissue. There are different techniques that can be used by the surgeon depending on the type of thighs that a patient has. After the surgery, there can be some side effects that can be felt during recovery. By knowing these side effects, patients can prepare for them beforehand so they will be more comfortable during recovery.

One of the common side effects of the surgery is nausea. This side effect is usually felt immediately after the surgery, and the main cause of it is the different chemicals, medication, and anesthesia used during surgery. This feeling eventually disappears in a few hours or days. If a patient remains nauseous after a few days, it would be best to bring it to the attention of the surgeon who did the procedure.

Another common side effect is bruising and swelling of the area. Although this can also be uncomfortable and very unsightly, it will heal and gradually disappear, depending on how fast the body can heal. The site of the bruising is not necessarily on the site of incision but much further. The swelling appears much closer to the area worked on and can remain for several months after the surgery. Swelling results from the accumulation of fluid due to the surgery, while the bruising is due to blood. Either can be reabsorbed by the body on its own, but some can also be drained if there is really a large accumulation. The pain caused by the swelling can be dealt with through pain relievers.

Patients are required by their doctors to move their legs after the surgery to make sure the formation of blood clots is avoided. This side effect is observed in patients who remain in a stationary position for a very long time. When the patient doesn’t move their legs or walk around, the circulation of blood is affected. This is why exercises are needed to help make sure that even if the patient doesn’t fully make use of their legs, they can still make sure that the blood circulates properly through them.

Feeling numbness in the area is also a possible side effect. Damage to the nerves is possible during the surgery, but it can also heal and repair itself if the damage is not severe. This results in temporary numbness of the thighs after the procedure.

10 Things You Need To Buy Before Plastic Surgery

Introduction

When considering plastic surgery, many patients forget that no matter how simple the intervention is, its success, as well as a fast recovery period, is greatly dependent on the measures taken by the patient.

Certain changes in lifestyle such as eating healthy and balanced can be extremely beneficial before plastic surgery as they can speed up the recovery process. Moreover, feeling anxious before going under the knife is completely natural, and this is why it is important for the patient to be prepared for the surgery, both physically and emotionally. Another important factor that will weigh heavily towards the success of your procedure is good communication with your plastic surgeon as well as the anesthetist.

In this article, we will discuss how you can prepare for plastic surgery and what are the ten most important things you need to buy before going to your appointment.

How to prepare for plastic surgery

As we have mentioned many times, plastic surgery involves incisions and the patient is subjected to certain risks. Getting bigger breasts and buttocks is not as easy as changing your hairstyle, despite what you might have heard on TV. This means that preparation is essential.

Communicate openly with the plastic surgeon

It is rarely the case for a patient to achieve satisfactory results after the intervention if the communication with the surgeon lacked in understanding. The reasons behind this are very simple. Unlike other types of surgical interventions performed to restore the functionality of an organ or to cure a health condition, plastic surgery is all about the patient’s desires and needs. And these needs are different from one patient to another. One patient will want bigger breasts, but with a discreet augmentation and a natural shape. Another will want to have perfectly round, augmented breasts that are very high on the chest and stand out looking anything but natural. Different people, different needs, different methods to provide the desired results. The plastic surgeon must evaluate the patient and offer recommendations, but in the end, it is the patient’s decision which way the surgery will go.

Even from the initial consultation, you will need to tell the plastic surgeon everything about your medical history. Do you have any allergic predisposition? Are you currently on any kind of treatment? Do you take vitamins and minerals on a daily basis? Even something as common as birth control pills need to be mentioned during the pre-operative consultation. There are medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory pills, vitamin E and certain food supplements (usually with ginseng or garlic extract) that can increase blood flow. This is why the surgeon might ask you to stop taking them a few weeks before the procedure is scheduled. Also, make it a priority to talk to the surgeon about your hopes and fears to allow him to assess the realism of your expectations and if they are doable or not.

Give up smoking

Smoking delays healing and you will be advised to stop smoking at least two weeks before the surgery. Smoking should also be avoided for at least two to three weeks after the surgery, so make sure you are ready to comply with the surgeon’s recommendation before scheduling your intervention.

Take all the mandatory tests

Some surgeons will recommend a minimal batch of tests before surgery while others will ask you to take more out of consideration for your well-being during and after the surgery. Depending on your age and health condition, the surgeon will advise you to undergo certain medical tests before any type of surgical intervention. There are a few mandatory blood tests but also tests to check the condition of the heart, lungs, and different parts of the body that will be targeted by the procedure.

Measures you need to take at home

For at least 6 to 8 hours prior to surgery, it is recommended for the patient not to drink or eat anything. At the same time, in most cases, all medication intake should be stopped, unless you have a green light from the anesthetist. It is also recommended to shower and clean the area where the surgery will be performed.

Here are ten things you need to buy before plastic surgery:

  1. Food and drinks

When returning from the hospital after the procedure, we can assure you that you will be in no mood for a trip to the store to get food for lunch. This is why we recommend our patients to buy food and drinks and other day-to-day necessities before the procedure. You will want to stock up on vegetables and fruits, lean meats and whole grain cereals as they will help you fight constipation that sometimes occurs after a surgery. Make sure to buy enough to last you a few days.

  1. Entertainment

It might sound funny, but you will have quite some time on your hands during the recovery period, so make sure you have entertainment available. Is there a book you wanted to read for quite some time and never got around it? You will have time now, so why not get it before the surgery? You can also consider games, movies, whatever you think will keep you entertained. After many plastic surgery interventions such as breast and buttock enhancement procedures and tummy tucks, the patient is advised to limit certain body movement. This means that you should get plenty of rest and not put pressure on the surgical sites.

  1. Ice packs

You will be happy to have these around the house, especially for the first week after surgery. During this time, the swelling after surgery is still obvious and applying ice packs on the areas treated will help with reducing the inflammation and also provide you some relief from the pain and discomfort. Make sure to apply the ice on a piece of cloth and not directly on the skin and don’t keep it on for more than 10 to 20 minutes at a time.

  1. Medication and supplements

Your plastic surgeon might advise you to get medication and supplements after you are discharged from the medical facility. It would be easier to hit the pharmacy before going to the operating room. Make sure to get only what your surgeon recommends and nothing else.

  1. Compression garments

Some plastic surgeons will provide compression garments required to be worn during the recovery period; others will just advise you on what to get. Wearing compression garments can significantly improve the results of your surgical intervention, so make sure you get them to wear as soon as the operation is over.

  1. Comfortable clothing

Are you going in for a breast augmentation? Then you certainly need some comfortable clothing after the procedure. Before anything else, ample arm movements are to be avoided, so you will need enough shirts or blouses with buttons in the front that can easily be put on or taken off. After any type of augmentation procedure, you will need some clothes to fit your new and improved body feature.

  1. Comfortable sitting/sleeping accessories

Are you undergoing a buttock enhancement procedure? Then you will need at least a pillow that you can use when sitting down, as sitting directly on your buttocks is not recommended for at least three weeks. If you are having a tummy tuck, you will need a chaise longue or plenty of pillows to put behind your back to maintain your body in a flexed position all the time.

  1. Thermometer

If you don’t have one around the house, now would be a good time to get it. It will help you monitor your temperature. High fever is a sign of infection that you want to detect as soon as possible to get treatment.

  1. Dressings

After being discharged from the medical facility, you will have to change the dressings yourself after cleaning the surgical wounds.

  1. Antibacterial soap

The most efficient way to avoid post-operative infection is to keep the incision sites clean. Use an antibacterial soap and follow the surgeon’s instructions when caring for the wound.

Conclusion

Aside from the physical preparation and the things that you need to get to make your recovery period smoother and faster, keep in mind that optimism will speed up the healing process as well.

Having already bought the things you will need after surgery should give you a certain peace of mind that you are ready and prepared. This will help you fight the pre-operative anxiety and the post-operative stress.

Among the things that you will need are healthy food and drinks, entertainments, dressings and the prescribed medication, suitable clothing, ice packs, and sitting and sleeping accessories that will make your life easier.

Plastic surgery procedures recommended after weight loss

Introduction

Considerable weight loss usually occurs after a conscious decision of the individual to improve his health and life. Plastic surgery often comes as a normal next step after significant weight loss. The individual has gotten rid of the excess weight by undergoing a weight loss program or bariatric surgery, and now he wants to improve the appearance of his body. Losing a considerable amount of weight can result in a not-so pleasing body figure. There is skin sagginess, a loss of body shape definition, and some leftover fat deposits that are difficult to get rid of using usual methods.

Plastic surgery procedures recommended after weight loss are designed to correct body imperfections that result after shedding off many kilograms. Among them, the most commonly performed ones are the tummy tuck, liposuction, arm lift, breast lift, and thigh lift.

Important considerations before undergoing plastic surgery after weight loss

Plastic surgery becomes a viable option to improve the aspect of the body only after the weight loss process is complete and the patient has achieved and maintained a stable weight that is closer to the ideal for at least six months. Weight fluctuations are a significant contraindication when it comes to cosmetic surgery, so it is important to keep this in mind before scheduling your procedure.

Weight loss is a process with multiple stages. The last step of this process is maintaining the results achieved. For some patients, this step is the most difficult of them all as it usually involves making important life changes. This is why a responsible plastic surgeon would recommend the patient to wait for six months to one year and even eighteen months before scheduling the interventions after the normal weight has been achieved. This is essential for the success of the surgery and also sustaining the results after the procedures. If considerable weight fluctuations occur after undergoing plastic surgery, the results of the initial intervention might be severely altered.

Benefits of undergoing plastic surgery after weight loss

The main reason why people who underwent bariatric surgery are resorting to plastic surgery is that they want their body shape to reflect their current weight. Even if the patient has a normal, close to ideal weight but a lot of skin sagginess in all areas of the body, the appearance of the body might not be aesthetically pleasing. A defined body contour makes the patient looks younger and more fit. Here are a few benefits of the cosmetic procedures:

–   The patient will get rid of the excess skin and the clothes will fit and look better on him

–   The patient will get rid of the infection and dermatological conditions that can occur on the sagging skin

–   Improved self-esteem and an enhanced body image.

Aesthetic procedures recommended after weight loss

In most cases, the patient will require one or a combination of these procedures: tummy tuck, liposuction, arm lift, breast lift, thigh lift.

The tummy tuck is recommended to improve the abdominal area that is, in many cases, severely impacted by weight gain and loss. An abdominal pouch can be present with a fold of skin descending towards (and even covering) the pubic area. During the tummy tuck, the plastic surgeon will remove the excess skin while also tightening the lax abdominal muscles. This is how we achieve a firm and flat abdominal area. A complete tummy tuck or the extended tummy tuck might be required, depending on the amount of skin to be excised and the position of the skin folds.

But the tummy tuck doesn’t deal with the thickness of the fat layer on the abdomen. So if the patient still presents a considerable thickness, liposuction can be performed to reduce it. In a vast majority of cases, I prefer to perform liposuction on the areas operated for skin excision and lifting purposes because the results after the surgery are superior. With the help of liposuction, we can remodel and reshape the body, better defining different areas of the body.

Breast lift surgery is another procedure that is necessary for a woman who underwent massive weight loss. Breasts consist of a skin envelope, fat tissue, and mammary gland, so they are also greatly affected by weight loss and gain. This means that when we put on weight, the size of the breasts also increases eventually and when the kilograms are shed off, fat will be eliminated from the bust area as well. In many cases, the skin envelope doesn’t have the capacity to retract on the new contours of the breasts, especially if the ligaments have been overly stretched for a long period of time or if the weight loss occurs suddenly and many kilograms are lost in a short period of time.

During the breast lift surgery, the plastic surgeon will remove the excess skin on the breasts and reposition them higher on the chest wall. This will give the breasts a more natural and youthful appearance. Due to the tissue excision that occurs during this procedure, the breasts will be smaller after the breast lift. This is the reason why many patients choose to undergo the breast lift procedure with an augmentation at the same time. Breast implants can be used to give more projection and volume to the breasts.

Arm and thigh lifts are recommended to re-contour areas which are sensitive to weight loss and gain. Due to the structure of the skin on these areas, the sagginess can be more pronounced here than on other parts of the body. Depending from patient to patient and the stage of skin ptosis, we have multiple options when it comes to performing these procedures. Again, it is recommended to combine them with liposuction for improved surgical results.

After the arm lift, the patient will have better defined upper arms that are free from excessive fat and skin tissue, and the same goes for the thighs. The general appearance of the body is considerably improved after a body lift surgery. Moreover, the patient will find it easier to find clothes that will fit better and accentuate their new body features.

Eligibility conditions for plastic surgery procedures after weight loss

Not everybody who lost a lot of weight is a good candidate for plastic surgery. There are a few conditions that need to be met in order for you to be deemed as eligible for surgery, namely:

  1. You are in good health condition

This means you are free from chronic medical conditions such as heart, lung or blood diseases. Patients with a poor health condition don’t make good candidates for plastic surgery in general as they have an increased risk of developing complications.

  1. You don’t smoke

Or at least you are ready to quit smoking for at least a few weeks before and after the procedures. This is very important as these procedures are usually performed in combination. This means more incisions and multiple operated areas that need to heal. Smoking causes a lack of oxygenation on the tissues which can trigger severe complications such as delayed wound healing, wound dehiscence, and skin necrosis.

  1. You keep a healthy and balanced diet

If you are still on a strict diet, the lack of proteins and nutrients from food can interfere with recovery, making it more difficult and long. When undergoing plastic surgery, it is recommended to have a balanced diet. This will also help you sustain the results of the intervention for longer.

  1. You have realistic expectations

Undergoing plastic surgery after weight loss won’t necessarily bring back the body shape you had maybe years ago before the weight gain occurred. The passing of time leaves permanent marks on the body, and it is not realistic to expect to look like you did before putting on weight. Keeping realistic expectations after plastic surgery is an essential part of the success of your intervention. Trust that your plastic surgeon will do his best to provide you with the best possible aesthetic result.

Conclusion

Undergoing plastic surgery after massive weight loss will improve the appearance of your body and give you a significant boost of self-esteem. The procedures usually recommended for patients who went through a weight loss process are the tummy tuck, arm and thigh lift, breast lift, and liposuction. One or more procedures might be needed to achieve a good result.

Keep in mind that even after a body contouring intervention, the skin will continue to be impacted by the passing of time as part of the natural aging process. This means that you will benefit from the new body image for as long as naturally possible if you sustain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular physical exercise.

Top 5 Myths That Make People Afraid to Undergo Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery has become more and more popular and in demand over the last few decades, and this is a reality that nobody can deny. Many people undergo cosmetic interventions to improve their appearance or correct certain imperfections. Nowadays, we have the choice to enhance our figures and be more beautiful than before. However, there are still many people who are afraid to undergo plastic surgery because they believe certain myths that are not true.

In this article, we will talk about the five most common myths related to plastic surgery interventions that make people postpone or put off for an indefinite period their much-needed procedure.

1.    All plastic surgery interventions require general anesthetic, and it is not safe for the patient.

There are people who heard from different sources that there is a possibility of not waking up due to the general anesthesia used during a surgical procedure. A general anesthetic is used for certain plastic surgery interventions, but certainly not for all of them. Among the questions we hear often related to anesthesia include: “Can you guarantee that I will wake up from anesthesia?” The sources of this fear of anesthesia are the legends of the public, and they are all extremely lacking proper foundation.

There are certain rules to follow for everything to go smoothly and with minimal risks during plastic surgery. For instance, blood tests will be required before the intervention so the plastic surgeon can personalize the anesthesia according to the needs and requirements of the patient. The patient should communicate any type of allergies or if he encountered issues before, during, or after a surgical intervention (allergic reactions to the anesthetics used before either on the patient or members of his family). It is also crucial for the patient to discuss with the surgeon about the current medication he might be taking and if he/she consumes alcohol regularly. Keep in mind that you should not eat or drink anything at least six or eight hours before your plastic surgery intervention with a general anesthetic to avoid vomiting when under anesthesia.

The respiratory function is supported by special machines, and during the surgery, the medical staff will monitor your vital and circulatory functions. The waking up from the anesthesia is done by stopping the administration of anesthetic. Practically we are talking about a deep, controlled sleep, and the demand on the body is minimal.

When it comes to plastic surgery, many interventions can be performed only with the patient under a general anesthetic, such as a body lift or a tummy tuck, which can take up to five or six hours. It would be very uncomfortable for the patient to be awake and aware for so long. Hence, the general anesthesia is preferred.

Many patients also ask why they feel nauseous and sometimes vomit after waking up from anesthesia. The answer to this is that the substances in the anesthetic that have an action at the level of the brain and on the pain receptors also affect the vomit receptors. When considering plastic surgery interventions, keep in mind that not all of them would require a general anesthetic, and the anesthesia used nowadays is safer than ever.

2.    You will get addicted to plastic surgery.

If this myth would be true, then we would have a lot of plastic surgery addicts nowadays, with plastic surgery being so affordable. But it is not. It is true that after undergoing a plastic surgery intervention, some patients decide to schedule another one to correct a different area of the body. Just think of someone who had a breast augmentation and now would like to improve her body shape further and get a tummy tuck, liposuction, or even a buttock augmentation. This doesn’t mean that this patient is addicted to surgery, but just that she found the procedures being easy to go through and worth it.

People who suffer from plastic surgery addiction will try to continuously change their appearance by undergoing procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation, facial lifts, or fillers. They use plastic surgery as a response to their persistent lack of satisfaction caused by their appearance. This condition is also known as body dysmorphic disorder.  When affected by this condition, the patient has no clear idea of his body image. As a result, the patient often finds it difficult to define his/her objectives when asked to talk about expectations after the surgery.

The difference between a patient who chooses to undergo multiple procedures to enhance the body shape and a patient addicted to plastic surgery is the medical indication. Behind any decision to undergo a plastic surgery must be a strong medical recommendation.  A responsible plastic surgeon will refuse to take a patient who is clearly addicted to plastic surgery and recommend to him/her to look for specialized treatment for such condition.

3.    Plastic surgery is too expensive.

If you will look at galleries with before-and-after pictures of patients who have undergone plastic surgery, you will notice different body shapes, different ages, different everything. Nowadays, the plastic surgery interventions are not only for the rich and famous, but they are also widely available for all kinds of people. More than this, most plastic surgeons would offer plenty of financial options for patients to be able to pay for the intervention. So if you thought you need to sell your house to get a breast augmentation with implants, you need to think again or, better yet, just go to a consultation with the plastic surgeon, and he will give you an exact cost estimate and the payment methods.

4.    Plastic surgery leaves big and bad-looking scars behind.

Before discussing this myth in detail, we have to mention that all surgical interventions will leave behind a certain amount of scarring. However, since plastic surgery values the aesthetic appearance, the scars will be kept to a minimum and positioned in areas where they will be less visible. The length of the scars varies from one intervention to another and also from one patient to another. For example, during liposuction, very small incisions will be made of no more than four or fove mm; while for a tummy tuck, the plastic surgeon might need to perform an incision that will go from one hip to the other. But even in the case of the tummy tuck, the scarring can be reduced depending on the amount of skin and tissue that needs to be removed. To ensure that your scars heal properly and beautifully, follow your plastic surgeon’s advice, and avoid sun exposure and intense physical exercises for some time after the procedure was performed.

5. Plastic surgery interventions entail many risks.

As it is the case with any other type of surgical procedure, plastic surgery comes with its risks and potential complications. However, if you choose a board-certified and experienced plastic surgeon to perform the surgical intervention, these procedures are no riskier than any other. Common risks are excessive bleeding, swelling and bruising, and developing an infection. In most cases, they can be prevented or treated easily.

Conclusion

Each and every one of us wants to feel and look beautiful and appreciated both from an intellectual point of view, as well as from an aesthetic one. The concern for our physical aspect has become an important part of our lives over the years and even a routine for people in the entertainment business or sales.  Plastic surgery can help patients achieve the appearance they dream of with minimal costs and risks. However, there are still people who avoid making the decision to undergo plastic surgery procedure because they believe that some myths are true.

Things like being afraid of not waking up after having a general anesthesia or getting addicted to plastic surgery after undergoing a cosmetic procedure are just myths that we busted today. While it is true that plastic surgery is associated with some risks, they are actually common to all surgical interventions and not specifically related to this type of surgery. Another myth is that plastic surgery is too expensive for the regular people and only available for celebrities. The wide range of patients coming from different economic backgrounds is proof that this is not true. Nowadays, plastic surgery is accessible to many people, and there are plenty of payment methods available for everyone.

The amount of scarring left by plastic surgery can also put people off when considering undergoing a plastic surgery procedure. However, you should keep in mind that plastic surgery is very focused on the aesthetic aspect, and this includes the scars left after the surgery. When choosing a talented and board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your procedure, you will notice that the amount of scarring is minimal, and the incisions are placed in areas where they can be easily masked with clothing and even lingerie.
