Is plastic surgery expensive?

Is plastic surgery expensive?

When considering undergoing plastic surgery, the cost is a factor that everybody takes into consideration, whatever their financial status might be. Plastic surgery nowadays can be in the range of a few hundred dollars to tens of hundreds of dollars, depending on the procedure, the plastic surgeon chosen, and other factors.

Generally speaking, nowadays plastic surgery is more affordable than ever. Ten years ago, plastic surgery was only for people with considerable wealth as everything was more expensive, and not only the plastic surgeons’ fees. Now there is a wide range of procedures to choose from, different materials that could be used, and different plastic surgeons to perform it.

Keep in mind that when performed by an experienced, talented and board-certified plastic surgeon, the procedure might seem more expensive, but this is not necessarily the reality. When choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, even if it might seem that you are paying more, what you actually do is save money in the long run. It is important to understand that is some cases if complications occur after the initial surgery or the results are unsatisfactory, additional procedures might be necessary. This means that you will have to pay for another procedure if the first one doesn’t deliver the expected results or you are confronted with complications. This is why it is a good idea to choose an experienced plastic surgeon to guide you through the process of getting an improved body image with the help of plastic surgery. He will make recommendations to reduce the incidence of complications. There are also bigger chances of getting the desired results.

When it comes to the cost of plastic surgery, you should know what is included in the cost estimate to be able to decide whether it is expensive or affordable. Generally speaking, on the cost estimate the plastic surgeon will put the hospitalization cost, anesthesia cost, cost of implants or other materials (if needed), and the fee of the plastic surgeon. This means that the cost of the operation is also dependent on the cost of the additional materials used. In other words, if you choose good quality breast implants for example, your procedure will be more expensive than one where poor quality implants are used.

The fee of the plastic surgeon is dependent on his experience but also the procedures to be performed. For example, when performing a procedure that includes fat transfer, some plastic surgeons estimate just one area of liposuction to be performed on, even if this is not enough to get all the fat needed for the grafting. Another surgeon might have a higher fee for the same procedure but include two or even three areas of liposuction in the cost. To be able to evaluate the cost of your plastic surgery, make sure to understand all the factors that come into play here.

How to ensure you get good results after plastic surgery

How to ensure you get good results after plastic surgery

Introduction

Many people who want to undergo plastic surgery are worried about what will happen after the procedure. In general, the most common fears are associated with the appearance of the scars, the length of the recovery process, and the complications that can occur long or short-term after the procedure. But, more than anything else, patients are concerned about the final results. As the final results are often not visible immediately after the procedure, the waiting time can be associated with a great deal of anxiety and stress for the patient. This is the reason why having a good plastic surgeon to guide your way through this process is essential.

When undergoing plastic surgery, it is true that you put your trust about your physical appearance and well-being in the hands of the plastic surgeon, but this doesn’t mean that the final results are all on him. In this article, we will discuss how to ensure you get good results after plastic surgery.

Choosing the plastic surgeon

When it comes to plastic surgery, the choice of the plastic surgeon is all on you. Practically, achieving good results after plastic surgery is entirely in your hands as you are the one selecting the plastic surgeon. This means that you have a great responsibility towards yourself to choose wisely. The cost shouldn’t be the main factor that dictates the choice of the plastic surgeon as there are other criteria that you should consider. More than anything, you should understand that when it comes to saving money, it can actually trigger a much larger cost in the end.

Generally speaking, lower costs hide something. It can be a lack of experience of the plastic surgeon, a medical facility that doesn’t have all the safety regulations in place, or bad quality materials to be used during surgery. All these often translate in the necessity to undergo additional procedures or complications occurring. This means that you might pay less at first only to pay a fortune later on. Financially speaking, this is not a wise decision. Even from a financial point of view, it is better to choose an experienced, talented and board-certified plastic surgeon, even if he can have fees that are higher. A good plastic surgeon will save you money in the long run, not to mention avoid complications that can affect your well-being and not only your physical appearance.

Choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon often makes patients more inclined to follow instructions to the letter, and this is another important part of ensuring you get good results.

Results of plastic surgery: Immediate versus final

Many people struggle to understand why it takes time to see the final results. In many cases, the immediate results that are visible as soon as the procedure is complete are very different from the results that transpire six months to a year after.

You should know that there are some plastic surgery procedures that can give results immediately. But when considering complex surgical procedures, you should know that it can take some time for the tissues to heal. It is not uncommon to notice swelling and bruising in the operated area as well as a change in sensitivity. These side effects are part of the healing process and are perfectly normal. Even in the context of simple procedures such as liposuction, it is necessary to wait until the skin retracts on the new contours of the body to assess the final result.

Depending on the complexity of the procedure and the areas that were treated, it can take a few weeks to even a year to see the final results. The healing process varies considerably from one procedure to another. In general, it is necessary to wait between 4 and 6 months after the procedure. It is also at the end of this period that before and after photographs are presented to the patient. Depending on the surgical plan, the results are visible more or less quickly. After liposuction, it can take between six weeks and three months to see a stable result. In the case of breast surgery with implants, it can take up to six months or a year. Follow-up consultations allow the plastic surgeon to evaluate how the recovery process is going and intervene if necessary to ensure you get good results.

To ensure you get satisfactory results after plastic surgery, you should be patient and not rush the healing or the cicatrization process as this might actually cause a delay in the recovery process. Breast implants will eventually descend to a more natural anatomical position, the skin will retract on the new contours of the body after liposuction, and the dimensions of the buttocks will be reduced a few months after the Brazilian butt lift. The most important thing you can do is wait patiently and follow the instructions of the plastic surgeon.

Post-operative instructions to ensure you get good results after plastic surgery

While the procedures can be very different and more or less invasive, there are a few post-operative instructions that are valid in the case of any plastic surgery procedure, such as:

–    Not to lie or sit directly on the operated area until the incisions are fully healed and closed

–    Not to perform intense or demanding physical activities

–    Not to smoke

–    To wear the compression garments

–    To take antibiotics and pain medication as per the doctor’s recommendation

–    To keep the incisions dry and clean at all times

–    Not to put creams or gels on the incisions not recommended by the plastic surgeon

–    To have a balanced and healthy eating regimen during the recovery period.

These are just a few of the recommendations that you will receive from your plastic surgeon. These instructions have the purpose of helping you avoid complications and ensure you get good results.

Keep a positive attitude

There are patients who are confident in the plastic surgeon and are sure they will get the best results possible, and then there are patients who worry and are not sure about their decision. Keeping a positive attitude can make all the difference and will help ensure you get good results after plastic surgery.

It is essential for the patient to understand that all recommendations that come from the plastic surgeon are to be followed and not debated. Let’s consider for a second the instruction not to lie or sit on the buttocks for at least three weeks after fat transfer or butt implant surgery. This can sound like such a struggle, but one that could certainly be avoided, right? Well, the reality is that it shouldn’t be avoided. This is a firm recommendation, and it should be followed to the letter. Otherwise, asymmetries can occur due to the death of fat cells in the case of the Brazilian butt lift, or the implants might shift if the procedure used implants.

The plastic surgeon is just your guide and an expert that wants to ensure you get good results. Keep in mind that it is important to give the body a rest period to recover. A work stoppage of between 8 days and 3 weeks may be necessary. It is also mandatory to set aside physical activities until the plastic surgeon decides you can resume them.

Conclusion

The patient can ensure getting good results after plastic surgery by doing two simple things. First, you need to choose a good, experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon and then follow his instructions to the letter. Moreover, the patient needs to understand that there can be a big difference between the results visible immediately after the procedure and the final results that can take up to one year to transpire.

Keeping a positive attitude and being patient are also important when trying to ensure you get good results after plastic surgery.

Wound opening after plastic surgery: What to do?

Wound opening after plastic surgery: What to do?

There is no surgery without risks, not even if it is performed for aesthetic purposes. Patients wanting to undergo plastic surgery to enhance the appearance of their bodies should know that, just like any other surgery, plastic surgery has risks and are associated with potential complications.

The complications that can occur after plastic surgery can occur during the operation, in the days or weeks following the procedure, and even years after the surgery is performed. When considering the complications that can occur during the operation, this is mostly excessive bleeding that can be caused by taking certain anti-inflammatory medication that has an anticoagulant role in the weeks before the procedure. The complications that could occur years after the procedure are associated with the use of implants, such as capsular contraction.

But most complications will occur in the days or weeks following the surgery, and this is the reason why many plastic surgeons will advise the patients to have someone assisting them during the first 48 to 72 hours post-op and also to pay attention to any abnormal symptom that was not discussed with the plastic surgeon before the procedure.

Among the complications that could occur during the first days or weeks following the procedure is wound opening. Many patients fear this complication and want to know what they should do if this happens. But first, let’s see what could cause the wound opening in the first place.

Things like infections, big seromas or hematomas, and even something as simple as a constipation can cause the incisions to open after plastic surgery. Intense or physically demanding activities could also trigger wound opening after surgery, so it is important to avoid them. A responsible plastic surgeon will tell you that looking after the incisions and keeping the area clean and dry at all times is essential after undergoing plastic surgery. This means that you shouldn’t be afraid to change the dressings if necessary and follow the steps demonstrated by the plastic surgeon or the medical staff.

In some cases, the plastic surgeon will use drain tubes to avoid the formation of seromas and hematomas. Even if the patient develops small seromas and hematomas, they usually disappear by themselves without additional treatment and without causing trouble. But seromas and hematomas that are big in size can cause wound opening, so make sure to see the plastic surgeon if you notice the overdevelopment of one of these accumulations of fluid or blood.

Whatever the cause might be, if you notice wound opening after the surgery, you need to contact the plastic surgeon. If the wound opening occurred as a result of infection, make sure to seek medical assistance as soon as possible as treatment is needed. Check the condition of the incisions at least once a day for at least the first month post-op and get in touch with the plastic surgeon if you notice anything unusual.

All about getting good results after liposuction

All about getting good results after liposuction

Introduction

How about getting rid of those unwanted pockets of fat in your body overnight? Yes, we are talking about those adipose deposits that are stubborn and resistant to diets and physical exercise and often localized in the tummy, flanks, thighs or even the lower back. Well, liposuction can take care of this and eliminate these deposits in a matter of hours with limited risks and a rather short recovery process.

Liposuction is the procedure used to address the subcutaneous layer of fat that can be in excess in certain areas of the body due to a genetic predisposition, hectic lifestyle and aging, among other things.

While liposuction is among the two most performed plastic surgery procedures, this doesn’t necessarily mean that everybody can resort to liposuction and achieve spectacular results with it. In this article, we will discuss what liposuction entails, who can undergo the procedure, and all about getting good results.

The ideal candidate for liposuction

Getting good results after liposuction means the patient is a good candidate for it. A good candidate is a man or a woman with elastic skin and good muscle tonus in the area/s that will be addressed with the procedure. The plastic surgeon should mention this, and the patients should be aware of the fact that when a patient has a considerable deposit of fat localized all around the body or saggy skin, it is possible for liposuction not to deliver a good result. Skin sagginess could be even more accentuated afterwards. Moreover, liposuction is not a solution for patients who are overweight or obese.

While the procedure indeed entails the elimination of adipose deposits that are in excess in certain areas of the body, it won’t get the patient rid of the 15 kg of fat that he accumulated over time. Liposuction deals exclusively with subcutaneous fat, which means that the plastic surgeon can only remove fat cells that are localized directly under the skin. When the patient is obese or overweight, this means that a considerable amount of fat is localized in the abdominal cavity, around the organs, etc. This means that even if liposuction is performed in some areas such as the tummy and the flanks, the only thing that will be achieved is a reduction of the thickness of the adipose tissue in the area and nothing more. Moreover, when liposuction is performed on overweight or obese patients, there is a risk of asymmetries to occur as well as skin irregularities. People who are overweight or obese also generally have poor skin tonus with a lack of elasticity as the skin has been overstretched to accommodate the excess weight and this means that it won’t retract on the new contours of the body after liposuction.

Keep in mind that liposuction is a solution for patients who need extracting up to six or seven liters of fat. It is true that we can extract much more fat in one session, but this is not recommended as it is not safe for the patient. Moreover, the more fat we extract in one session, the more increased is the risk of developing irregularities and saggy skin after the procedure.

The ideal candidate for liposuction is also aware of the fact that liposuction is not a treatment for stretch marks or cellulite. The procedure won’t have any effect on stretch marks as these are ruptures of the skin fiber, and liposuction targets the fat underneath the skin. When considering the effect liposuction has on cellulite, things can vary. Cellulite is also a skin condition that is more of an aesthetic nature than medical. When addressing the fat layer in areas affected by cellulite, the patient might notice that the cellulite is not as visible as it was before. Exactly the opposite thing might happen as well, and cellulite can become more obvious. Generally speaking, I advise my clients to see cellulite as a cosmetic issue that can’t be treated with plastic surgery.

Getting good results after liposuction

For patients interested in doing their best for getting good results after liposuction, it is important to know that there is a host of things that need to be addressed for this goal to be achieved.

First, choose the right plastic surgeon to perform your procedure, get ready, and follow the post-operative instructions diligently. These are all crucial for the success of your procedure and to get good results.

  1.    Choosing the plastic surgeon

Liposuction is so commonly performed nowadays that most people believe that any doctor could do the procedure and deliver spectacular results. This is not correct. To get impressive results, you need to choose an experienced, talented board-certified plastic surgeon. Just like many other procedures, the experience of the plastic surgeon plays an important role in getting good results and also keeping potential complications at bay. When choosing an inexperienced doctor to perform your liposuction, you have an increased risk of getting unsatisfactory results and be left with bumps in the area treated with the procedure, such as saggy skin, asymmetries, skin irregularities.

Make sure to ask the surgeon if he performs the procedure routinely and if you can see before and after pictures of patients he operated on before.

  1.    Preparing for the procedure

After finding the right plastic surgeon, the next important thing to do is follow his recommendations for pre-operative preparations. Liposuction is not like getting your nails done, even if the procedure might actually take less time than a manicure with gel in some cases. Liposuction is a serious surgical procedure that should be treated as such. This means that the preparation period starts about a month before the procedure is scheduled when the patient is advised to stop taking birth control medication. During the month before, the recommendation is to keep a balanced and healthy diet and not try to lose weight. Overeating is also discouraged at this time, and your results can be affected if you eat in excess before the procedure.

Anti-inflammatory medication containing aspirin as well as natural supplements with blood-thinning properties should be avoided two weeks before the procedure. If general anesthesia will be used, the patient is advised not to eat or drink anything at least eight hours beforehand. Otherwise, complications can be triggered.

  1.    Post-operative conduct

Liposuction is one of the procedures that doesn’t entail a long recovery period in a vast majority of cases. This means that the patient can usually resume normal activities within the next few days after the procedure and even work if no intense physical effort is involved.

The plastic surgeon will instruct you to avoid smoking for at least three weeks post-op to allow for a fast and smooth recovery process and to wear the compression garments according to the recommendations. Generally speaking, the compression garments or girdle should be worn non-stop for the first two to four weeks and after this just during the day for another month.

Keep in mind that there are no two patients alike and the recommendations of the plastic surgeon are customized for each patient. This means that you should discuss this issue in detail with your doctor before undergoing the procedure. Intense physical exercises should be avoided for at least a month after the procedure, depending on the area that was addressed.

  1.    Combining liposuction with other procedures

In some cases, liposuction can provide good results only if performed with other plastic surgery procedures. For example, liposuction is frequently performed together with a tummy tuck where the abdominal wall is concerned, and the patient is after a certain age or has poor skin quality.

Conclusion

Liposuction is the plastic surgery procedure that aims to deliver a better-defined body. Getting good results after liposuction requires choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, following his recommendations for before and after care, and having realistic expectations from the procedure.

The first thing you should make sure of if you want to get spectacular results is that you are a good candidate. Keep in mind that the procedure is not meant to be used as a treatment for obesity or getting rid of excess weight. It is only a body remodeling procedure.

How to deal with unsatisfactory results after plastic surgery

How to deal with unsatisfactory results after plastic surgery

Introduction

Plastic surgery, even if performed for aesthetic reasons, is not without risks. Some risks are common to many surgeries, while others are specific to a certain procedure. But there is one risk that is present each time we consider undergoing plastic surgery: getting unsatisfactory results.

Many patients are not aware of this risk and find themselves in a situation of not knowing how to deal with unsatisfactory results after plastic surgery. In this article, we will discuss why unsatisfactory results occur, how to prevent them, and how to deal with them.

Causes of unsatisfactory results and how to avoid them

It is important to mention that achieving unsatisfactory results doesn’t necessarily mean that the plastic surgeon made a mistake, so it is not the same with malpractice. However, the experience of the plastic surgeon can be a factor that could lead to unsatisfactory results, but not the only one. Here are some causes and how to prevent them:

–    Not clearly communicating your goals and expectations

The results of plastic surgery can depend on many factors, but one of the most important ones is communicating your goals and expectations in a clean manner.

When thinking about undergoing plastic surgery, you should also consider how you will express your goals and ideas to the plastic surgeon. The fact that you have it very clear in your head what you want to achieve with the procedure is not a guarantee that the plastic surgeon will understand what you want.

This is the reason why I advise my patients, and I will also show them pictures to better get an understanding of what is desired. It is essential to understand that when it comes to plastic surgery, one patient’s satisfactory result can be another patient’s unsatisfactory result. With plastic surgery, the personal aesthetic sense makes the difference. While there are some industry standards, this doesn’t mean that all patients will want to achieve the same thing.

Let’s just consider breast implant surgery. We have round implants and anatomically shaped implants. Depending on which one we choose, the results will be very different. Some patients can consider that round implants are the only ones to deliver them the results they desire, while others might consider that the breasts don’t look entirely natural with this type of implant.

To reduce the risk of getting unsatisfactory results as a result of not communicating efficiently with the plastic surgeon, you can write down details about the results you expect and also prepare pictures of patients that had the same procedure and achieved the results you want. Show them to the plastic surgeon during the pre-operative consultation.

–    Having unrealistic goals and expectations

A sure way to get unsatisfactory results after plastic surgery is having unrealistic expectations. Among unrealistic expectations we can mention things like “perfectly symmetrical breasts” or anything involving the word “perfect,” because plastic surgery should be used to improve the appearance not achieve perfection. Moreover, patients who want to undergo plastic surgery to change their appearance in order to look more like someone else are setting themselves up for failure. This is another type of unrealistic expectation. Having surgery to make your butt look like Jennifer Lopez’s can result in unsatisfactory results, especially if your anatomical characteristics are very different from the celebrity’s.

Having unrealistic goals and expectations from the procedure will always end with the patient dissatisfied with the results. I have patients coming in saying “I know I won’t get what I want with this procedure, but I want to go with it anyway.” This is not a good idea. Undergoing plastic surgery and subjecting yourself to the risks only to achieve results you know you don’t want is just not worth it.

To reduce the risk of getting unsatisfactory results due to unrealistic expectations, you should discuss this issue in detail with the plastic surgeon during the pre-operative consultation. If the plastic surgeon tells you that the results will be different from your expectations, think very carefully if you want to have the procedure or not.

–    Not following post-operative protocol

The results of the procedure are not only in the hands of the plastic surgeon. The patient can also influence the results. Getting unsatisfactory results after plastic surgery may also be caused by not following post-operative protocol. In many cases, the patient will be asked to adopt a certain behavior and follow certain rules after the procedure. Generally, we are talking about not smoking, wearing the compression garments, not sleeping or resting on the operated area, and avoiding intense physical efforts for a few weeks or months post-op. Not following these instructions can result in an alteration of the results and hence unsatisfactory results in the long run.

–    Not choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon

The experience and talent of the plastic surgeon are also important when it comes to achieving satisfactory results after plastic surgery. It is only normal for a more experienced plastic surgeon to achieve better results and to better understand the expectations of the patient.

Some patients make cost the primary reason for choosing one plastic surgeon over the other, but this is not very wise. An inexperienced plastic surgeon will always charge less than one who performs the procedure routinely.

To avoid getting unsatisfactory results due to the lack of experience of the plastic surgeon, make sure to check his qualifications before scheduling the procedure and look at before and after pictures with previous patients who had the same procedure done.

How to deal with unsatisfactory results after plastic surgery

If you notice that the results achieved are not according to your expectations, you should discuss this with the plastic surgeon. After the procedure, there should be follow-up consultations that will allow the plastic surgeon to assess the recovery process and also give you the opportunity to talk about the results. In some cases, the plastic surgeon will tell you that more time is needed before the final results can transpire.

Generally speaking, the results of plastic surgery are immediately visible but can take up to one year for the final results to show up. This is normal, and if you are unhappy with the results after a month or two, the plastic surgeon might advise you to wait some more. In most cases, after six months we can assess the results of a procedure and see if the patient is happy with it or not. In case of extreme asymmetries or other issues that are visible to the naked eye, you should consider revision surgery.

If you don’t feel prepared to undergo revision surgery with the same plastic surgeon due to a lack of trust, you can always see another plastic surgeon for a second opinion and to have the procedure performed by someone else.

When it comes to dealing with unsatisfactory results, the main thing that the patient should do is keep calm and think of all the options. Discussing with another specialist can bring some light into the matter and give a new perspective on things. Making rushed decisions is never a good idea, so you should take your time and think of how you want to proceed from now on: should you undergo a revision surgery? If yes, who do you want to perform your procedure?

Conclusion

Achieving unsatisfactory results after plastic surgery is a risk for any patient. Despite what most people believe, it is not necessarily the lack of abilities of the plastic surgeon that causes unsatisfactory results. In this article, we have discussed some of the causes of unsatisfactory results and how to prevent them. It is important to discuss things in detail with the plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeon has the responsibility to give you all the details about the procedure, and you should also give the plastic surgeon all the details about your expectations. Wanting to undergo plastic surgery to look like someone else to become perfect is a sure recipe for failure, so better avoid these.

Are there alternatives to plastic surgery?

Are there alternatives to plastic surgery?

Before resorting to plastic surgery, many patients try other methods that are advertised or believed to correct a body or facial imperfection. When it comes to undergoing surgery, the same holds true as with other fields of medicine: surgery should be the last resort, only to be tried after all else has failed. In other words, plastic surgery becomes an option when all else fails. However, there are also body imperfections that can’t be corrected any other way than with plastic surgery, and trying otherwise would only be a waste of time and money for the patient.

Take for example the breast lift. There are no other alternatives for this procedure. Not even another plastic surgery procedure can substitute for a breast lift, despite the common belief that breast implants will do the trick. The procedure requires the removal of excess skin from the breasts and also re-centering the mammary gland to a more natural position on the chest wall. This can’t be achieved with exercise, diets, pills or massages, no matter what you’ve read online. When it comes to ptosis and excess skin, the only viable solution is surgical removal. This means that plastic surgery is the only possible option.

Now let’s have a look at liposuction. Many believe that liposuction is a fast method to lose weight for people who don’t want to eat right and exercise. But is this true? Before anything else, we should mention that liposuction is not a weight loss method. During a single liposuction session, the surgeon shouldn’t remove more than 6 to 7 liters of fat. This means that the weight loss is not impressive for a patient who is obese or overweight.

Liposuction is a body remodeling procedure that should be used after the patient has achieved his ideal weight with exercise, diet, or any other means. Liposuction comes to further contour the body by eliminating localized fat deposits or fat accumulations that were resistant to the other methods used. Even people who exercise regularly and have a healthy eating regimen can develop adipose pockets in areas difficult to address with exercise such as the knees, calves, chin, and even the flanks where fat tends to start accumulating with fat. As you can see, despite common belief, liposuction doesn’t have other alternatives as there is nothing else that can deliver the same results.

As for fat transfer, there is definitely no alternative for fat grafting. During these procedures, the plastic surgeon will remove the fat from areas where it is in excess with liposuction and then use the fat to inject it in areas that could use the volume. Fat grafting can be done to the breasts, buttocks, and even the hips. The hourglass hip procedure that involves fat transfer to the hips is one of the most popular and effective procedures to help the patients get an hourglass silhouette.

Reasons why the plastic surgeon might postpone your procedure

Reasons why the plastic surgeon might postpone your procedure

Introduction

We often hear of people undergoing plastic surgery, and over the last few years, most people got the idea that practically anyone can have surgery to improve their physical appearance, practically at any time that is convenient for them. In reality, things are a bit different. It is true that plastic surgery nowadays can be performed on a wide variety of people, including people suffering from different health conditions, a thing that was not possible in the past. Nowadays with the development of modern medicine and a bit of preparation, different kinds of people can undergo plastic surgery. At the same time, scheduling the procedure is not necessarily at the discretion of the patient. Moreover, even after the procedure is scheduled, it can be postponed if the plastic surgeon decides it is for the best.

In this article, we will discuss a few reasons why the plastic surgeon might postpone your procedure for a different time and even refuse to operate on you in some cases.

Eligibility for the plastic surgery procedure

The general rule is to perform plastic surgery only on patients who are physically and emotionally healthy and in good condition. These procedures don’t target people who are obese or severely overweight, even if some of them can be used for slimming different areas of the body. Patients who are eligible for plastic surgery need to be free of severe or chronic lung, heart, and blood condition and not undergo treatment with anti-inflammatory medication. Aside from the physical aspect, there is also the mental one. When assessing the patient’s eligibility for a certain procedure, the plastic surgeon will have to make sure that the patient has good reasons for undergoing the procedure and has realistic expectations.

Generally speaking, the plastic surgeon can decide to postpone the procedure or even cancel it when the eligibility criteria that were met during the pre-operative consultation are not actual anymore. Here are a few reasons why the plastic surgeon might postpone your procedure:

  1.    You don’t want to/can’t quit smoking

Smoking interferes with many functions of the body, and it is a bad habit frowned upon by non-smokers. However, when it comes to smoking and undergoing plastic surgery procedures, things can be even more complicated.

Smoking delays healing and can trigger severe complications such as delayed wound healing, wound dehiscence, and skin or fat tissue necrosis, among others. The plastic surgeon will advise you to stop smoking at least three to six weeks before your plastic surgery procedure and remain a non-smoker for the same amount of time after the procedure.

When scheduling the procedure, most patients are very keen on following the rules and think it will be easy to quit smoking before the procedure. Some of them manage to avoid smoking for the recommended period and undergo the procedure with more chances of having a smooth and uneventful recovery process. But there are other patients who don’t succeed in their efforts to quit smoking or at least reduce the number of cigarettes smoked per day, and in this case, the plastic surgeon might decide to postpone or cancel the procedure for the well-being of the patient. Certain procedures such as a complex tummy tuck, for example, require the patient to avoid coughing as much as possible not to trigger the rupture of the incisions. If the patient continues to smoke or quits smoking right before the procedure, he could be suffering from coughing fits all throughout the recovery period and this could be dangerous.

To make sure you have no surprises regarding your surgery’s date, make sure to quit smoking when the plastic surgeon recommends it.

  1.    You are taking anti-inflammatory medication

Before any type of surgical procedure, there is the recommendation not to take anti-inflammatory medication containing aspirin. Even natural supplements should be avoided for two weeks before the procedure. This recommendation is made with the aim of reducing the risk of excessive bleeding during and after the procedure. Anti-inflammatory medication containing aspirin as well as certain natural supplements have blood thinning properties, and this means that excessive bleeding can occur and trigger more severe complications.

If the patient is under anti-inflammatory medication, inform your plastic surgeon, especially if the treatment is long-term. The plastic surgeon might suggest changing the doses or postponing the procedure for later on when the treatment is over.

  1.    You can’t stop birth control treatment

Among the tests that patients are required to take before any plastic surgery procedure is the pregnancy test. Aside from this, patients are also advised to stop birth control medication a month before the procedure. Birth control pills can increase the risk of developing a blood clot and hence there is an increased danger of deep vein thrombosis, which is a severe complication after plastic surgery. If the patient can’t stop or forgets to stop birth control medication a month before the procedure, it might be postponed. This is especially possible in the case of procedures performed on the tummy such as the tummy tuck where there is a higher risk of deep vein thrombosis.

If you stop birth control medication, make sure to protect a month before the procedure as getting pregnant would be another reason for not being able to undergo the procedure.

  1.    You contracted an infection or a cold

So, you have a runny nose and you cough a bit: it’s not a big deal, right? You took two weeks off from work after plastic surgery, so you reckon you’ll have plenty of time to get better from your cold during the recovery period. Well, things don’t quite work this way. One of the eligibility criteria to undergo plastic surgery is to be in good health condition. If the patient has a condition that occurred after the pre-operative assessment, the procedure can be postponed.

And it doesn’t have to be something overly serious. Something as small as a cold or a dental infection can determine your procedure to be postponed until the condition is cured.

It is important for patients resorting to plastic surgery to understand that the body should be at its best before undergoing surgery to have a fast and smooth recovery process. Otherwise, complications could be triggered.

  1.    You are not ready to undergo the procedure

You had the pre-operative consultation with the plastic surgeon, you had the tests recommended and even the meeting with the anesthetist, but you are still having second thoughts about undergoing the procedure. If this is the case, the plastic surgeon might decide that the best option is to postpone the procedure until you know you are ready.

Undergoing plastic surgery entails long-term consequences, aside from potential risks and complications. This is why it is essential for patients to be sure they want to go forward with the procedure. There are certain things that can’t be undone once the procedure is performed. For example, a potential long-term consequence after breast reduction surgery is difficulties in breastfeeding or an inability to breastfeed. If the patient is unhappy with the results, implants can be used to increase the size of the breasts once again, but the consequence of the initial procedure can’t be reversed.

The patient should be physically and emotionally ready to undergo the procedure and also sure that this is what she wants. Otherwise, a responsible plastic surgeon will end up postponing the procedure until a later date.

Conclusion

While it is not something we hear about on a daily basis, it is possible for the plastic surgeon to postpone a procedure that was scheduled for a certain date due to a development of things. The details of the procedure and the initial assessment of the eligibility of the patient are discussed during the pre-operative consultation with the plastic surgeon. After this, the patient has a list of recommendations and preparations to follow, as well as a list of medical tests to take to ensure no contraindications are present. If the tests show results that were not expected, the patient is required first to deal with the conditions and only after to undergo the procedure. But even if all seems fine, the plastic surgeon can decide to postpone or cancel the procedure if the patient fails to follow the pre-operative instructions related to quitting smoking, not taking anti-inflammatory medication, or birth control pills. At the same time, if the patient is having second thoughts or is overly anxious and not sure about undergoing the procedure, the plastic surgeon can decide she is not prepared to go through with the procedure and postpone it.
